Research and Professional Experience
  • I have two primary research interests. The first is on HIV-HBV coinfection where I have projects in Nigeria, Australia and the United States. In addition, I am leading a multicenter international study looking at HIV-HBV co-infection within the ACTG framework.
  • My second area is on the human genetic determinants of HBV and HCV clearance where I examine polymorphisms in human genes in persons that have either recovered from or have a persistent viral hepatitis infection.
Keywords
  • hepatitis B, hepatitis C, genetics, HIV-HBV coinfection

Research Projects
A5175: Nested study of the treatment of chronic hepatits B in HIV infected persons
The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that treatment of chronic hepatits B in HIV infected persons is more efficacious with Truvada compared to either lamivudine or emtricitabine alone. We are also investigating the development of drug-resistant virus.

Hepatitis B treatment and HIV Infection in resources limited settings
Chronic hepatitis B (CH-B), which is the leading cause of end stage liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma worldwide, affects an estimated 10% of HIV-infected persons. The current options for treating CH- B have poor efficacy. As antiretroviral therapy is introduced into areas with the...

Liver Disease and HIV-HBV Coinfection in the HAART era
Chronic hepatitis B (CH-B) is common in HIV-infected persons, and HIV accelerates the rate of hepatitis B-related liver disease progression. In the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS), the risk of liver-related death was nearly 18 times higher in those coinfected with HIV-HBV compared to those...

NIH/Johns Hopkins Bench to Bedside Project: Hepatitis B and HIV Co-Infection
The NIH Bench to Bedside program provides a unique opportunity to develop a systematic research program to improve understanding and management of HIV and hepatitis B (HBV) co-infection, from ‘bench’ to ‘bedside’ to ‘bush’. Building on the existing NIH/NIAID International Center for Excellence in...
