Research and Professional Experience
  • Richard E. Chaisson, M.D., is Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology and International Health and Director of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Tuberculosis Research. From 1988-1998 he was Director of the Johns Hopkins AIDS Service, and co-founded the Johns Hopkins HIV Clinic cohort, an observational study that has been the source of more than 130 scientific publications on the outcomes of HIV disease and its treatment. In 1998 he founded the Center for Tuberculosis Research, a multidisciplinary research and training center with more than $100 million in grants for the study of TB from bench to bedside. Dr. Chaisson's research interests focus on tuberculosis and HIV infection, including global epidemiology and control, prevention, clinical trials, and public health interventions. He is currently principal investigator of 11 research grants, and is principal investigator of the Consortium to Respond Effectively to the AIDS/TB Epidemic (CREATE), an international research consortium funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to assess the impact of novel strategies for controlling HIV-related TB. He has published over 350 scientific papers and book chapters.

Research Projects
A Case-Control Study Investigating the Intersection Between Tobacco Use, Tuberculosis and HIV-infection
The overall objective of this proposal is to investigate the association between tobacco use and tuberculosis in HIV-infected males in Johannesburg, South Africa where rates of all three epidemics are extremely high. We will conduct a case-control study restricting all participants to HIV...

A Randomized Trial of Novel TB Preventive Regimens for HIV-Infected Adults in Soweto, South Africa
This is a four-arm study of alternative preventive therapy regimens for latent TB in HIV-infected adults. The study will provide critically important information on the most effective therapies to prevent HIV-related TB, and will assess the potency of short-course regimens containing rifamycins,...

CDC Tuberculosis Trials Consortium
The TBTC is a collaboration of researchers from the CDC, domestic and international public health departments, academic medical centers, and selected Veterans Administration medical centers whose mission is to conduct programmatically relevant research concerning the diagnosis, clinical...

Clinical Research in Tuberculosis
Dr. Chaisson proposed to provide support for patient oriented research on tuberculosis control in developing countries, mentoring of junior faculty and fellows in clinical research, and leadership of the Johns Hopkins Center for TB Research, which was founded at the time of the original award....

DOT-HAART For HIV-Infected South African Adults
The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of directly observed therapy (DOT) using patient-nominated peer supervisors as a strategy to improve adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in HIV-infected adults in South Africa. This country...

Effect of community-wide isoniazid preventive therapy on tuberculosis among South African gold miners. A project of Consortium to Respond Effectively to the AIDS-TB Epidemic (CREATE)
Thibela means prevent in Sotho, the predominant language of the gold miners of South Africa. Thus, the study''''s name, Thibela TB, describes the study''''s purpose: to measure the maximum possible benefit of community-wide isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) on TB incidence and prevalence at a...

Evaluation of a Moxifloxacin-Based, Isoniazid-Sparing Regimen for Tuberculosis Treatment, TBTC Study 28
CDC funded multicenter study. Prospective, randomized Phase II clinical study of moxifloxacin-based regimen for intensive phase of active TB treatment. Collaborating institution: Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Impact of TB Preventive Therapy for HIV/TB Co-infected Patients with Access to Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: A Phased Implementation Trial. A project of Consortium to Respond Effectively to the AIDS-TB Epidemic (CREATE)
The THRio study is designed to determine whether the routine detection and treatment of TB infection found in HIV infected patients in HIV clinics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, reduces TB incidence in the clinic population receiving HIV care. Involving an estimated 15,000 clinic patients, the...

Longitudinal Study of HIV-Associated Lung Infections in Soweto
In sub-Saharan Africa rates of tuberculosis (TB) and HIV infection are extremely high. TB is the leading cause of death in HIV-infected adults and often is the initial clinical manifestation. TB in HIV-infected patients carries a high risk of death which occurs predominantly in the first days to...

Novel TB Prevention Regimens for HIV-Infected Adults
Tuberculosis (TB) continues to kill approximately 2 million people per year, and is a major cause of HLV-related morbidity and mortality in developing countries. In addition, TB appears to cause a more rapid progression of HIV disease even when it is successfully treated, as active TB causes...

Peer and Family-Based Social Support For HIV Treatment Adherence in South Africa
The goal of this study is to understand the role of family or peer support as a tool for improving adherence to antiretroviral therapy in an HIV positive population in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Data will be collected from a clinical trial evaluating the impact of community-based...

South African Tb/AIDS Training
The goal of the South African TB-AIDS Training (SATBAT) program is to expand the ability of South African investigators to conduct state-of-the-art operational, health services and clinical research relevant to the twin epidemics of TB/AIDS. The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS (PEPFAR) and...

TBTC Tuberculosis Trial Consortium
The TBTC is a collaboration of researchers from the CDC, domestic and international public health departments, academic medical centers, and selected Veterans Administration medical centers whose mission is to conduct programmatically relevant research concerning the diagnosis, clinical...

ZAMSTAR: Zambia and South Africa tuberculosis and AIDS reduction study. A study of the Consortium To Respond Effectively To the AIDS/TB Epidemic (CREATE).
A total of 24 communities in Zambia and Cape Town communities in South Africa, with 25,000 to 50,000 people in each community will take part in the ZAMSTAR study. This is a community-randomized trial of two interventions with a factorial design. All communities will experience strengthened DOTS...
