Center for Tuberculosis Research
- My primary research focus is the epidemiology of tuberculosis, primarily in the context of HIV infection. I am currently a co-investigator on two large scale community randomized trials in Brazil, one investigating isoniazid preventive therapy for HIV-infected patients as part of the CREATE consortium. I also conduct research in South Africa, working on several HIV-related studies at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. My doctoral topic was Delays in the Diagnosis of Tuberculosis in Maryland and I am currently working on several projects in this field in the US and Brazil.

Since 2005, I have been the primary instructor for the Epidemiologic Basis for Tuberculosis Control, a class developed by Dr. George W. Comstock. This course is conducted thrice-yearly, both in class and online as part of the distance education program at Johns Hopkins University. I have also developed a one-year training course for Brazilian and South African clinicians and epidemiologists emphasizing methods in developing, implementing and analyzing epidemiologic studies. This course concentrates on HIV/TB population research, and have now expanded this course with another training grant to include trainees from these countries interested in HIV-related malignancies.

Research Projects
A Case-Control Study Investigating the Intersection Between Tobacco Use, Tuberculosis and HIV-infection
The overall objective of this proposal is to investigate the association between tobacco use and tuberculosis in HIV-infected males in Johannesburg, South Africa where rates of all three epidemics are extremely high. We will conduct a case-control study restricting all participants to HIV...
Preventive Therapy for HIV/TB Co-infected Patients with Access to Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: A Phased Implementation Trial. A project of Consortium to Respond Effectively to the AIDS-TB Epidemic (CREATE)
The THRio study is designed to determine whether the routine detection and treatment of TB infection found in HIV infected patients in HIV clinics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, reduces TB incidence in the clinic population receiving HIV care. Involving an estimated 15,000 clinic patients, the...
