- Dr. Barnes’ work focuses on the genetic basis for acute and chronic airway disease, and is based on diverse family-based and independent African Caribbean, South American, Western European (Netherlands, Germany), and local African American populations. Specifically, her studies are centered on gene-environment interactions and the interface of innate and adaptive immunity in the immunogenetics of various lung, allergic and infectious diseases including asthma, acute lung injury, atopic dermatitis and schistosomiasis.

She is currently leading a genomics project and a genomics Core for the Specialized Centers of Clinically-Oriented Research (SCCOR) on ‘Molecular Approaches to Ventilator-Associated Lung Injury’ (Roy Brower, PI), and leads the genetics/genomics Core sections in two additional SCCORS, one focusing on pulmonary hypertension and the other on various rheumatic diseases. Additionally, she leads a genetics projects on two different Center grants on asthma, an NIH contract on vaccinia in atopic dermatitis, in addition to her own and other NIH-funded studies. She was recently awarded the Genome-Wide Association Studies to Identify Genetic Components that Relate to Heart, Lung and Blood Disorders, RFA HL-06-012, to perform a study on Genome-Wide Association Studies of Asthma in Populations of African Descent (R01 HL087699-01, Barnes, PI).

Prevalence of asthma and underlying risk factors in two Peruvian cities
Asthma was previously considered to be uncommon in Latin America; however, recent studies in different Latin American cities have identified that its prevalence currently ranges between 18% and 27%. These estimates are very high when compared with those reported in other developing countries and...
