Research and Professional Experience
  • Ana Navas-Acien is a physician-epidemiologist with a specialty in Preventive Medicine and Public Health and with a long-term interest in the health consequences of widespread environmental exposures. Based on an epidemiologic approach, her research investigates chronic health effects of arsenic, selenium, lead, cadmium and other trace metals.
  • Given the paucity of epidemiologic data at low/moderate levels, the possible biological basis, and the controversy for current environmental standards, this challenging area of research is potentially relevant for public health. For exposures with large epidemiologic evidence of the adverse health effects, such as secondhand smoke, her interest is to conduct research in support of progressive policies to reduce involuntary exposure to environmental toxins.
Keywords
  • Environmental epidemiology, cardiovascular epidemiology, epidemiologic methods, systematic reviews, biomarkers, arsenic, heavy metals, secondhand smoke
Honors and Awards
  • Advising, Mentoring & Teaching Recognition Award (AMTRA), 2008-2009
  • Phi Beta Kappa, 2005, Johns Hopkins University
  • Fulbright Scholar, 2002-2004, sponsored by Spain’s Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs
  • Robert Dyar Memorial Award Fund, 2001-2002, Department of Epidemiology, JHBSPH

Research Projects
Arsenic Exposure, Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes in Native Americans
Tens of millions of people in the US and abroad are exposed to arsenic in drinking water above 10 ug/L, the current US arsenic standard. In the US, naturally occurring arsenic in drinking water disproportionately affects rural communities of the Western States, including Native Americans. The...

Second Hand Tobacco Smoke Exposure in Bar and Nightclub Employees
The objective of this study is to assess exposure of bar and nightclub employees to secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS) in 23 countries throughout the world. For this project, which is just starting, we will sample 10 bars and up to 5 employees per bar in each country. SHS will be assessed using...
