Research and Professional Experience
  • Gene-environment interactions that regulate inflammation and oxidative stress play an important role in determining susceptibility to lung diseases. Our lab focuses on understanding the role of the bzip transcription factor, Nrf2 that regulates host stress response due to environmental factors and oxidative stress. Studies from our laboratory using mice models have indicated that Nrf2 directed host response may be critically involved in various pulmonary diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), innate immune dysfunction and acute lung injury (ALI), asthma, and cancer. Ongoing projects in our laboratory are focused on understanding the Nrf2 dependent regulation of host stress response which critically determines the initiation, progression, and pathophysiology of these diseases. Translational strategies based on targeting Nrf2 for intervention of these diseases are being developed.
