About Peru


General Information
Background[1]: Located in Western South America along the South Pacific Ocean, the Republic of Peru is slightly smaller than Alaska and was home to several Andean civilizations such as the Incas. Its independence from the Spanish conquistadors was acquired in 1821 and since democratic leadership since 1980, Peru is in need of a presidency that will secure social and fiscal responsibilities. Peru's landscape beholds the Amazon River, the Andes mountains, and lush jungles but needs to take into consideration the deforestation, water and air pollution, and overgrazing.

Population[1]: 28,674,757 (estimated, 2007)
Capital City[1]: Lima
Climate[1]: tropical in east to dry desert in west; temperate to frigid in Andes
